Our Mission
Open and Go Phonics exists to make high-quality, research-based phonics instruction freely available to every parent, caregiver, and teacher — regardless of budget, training, or time.
We believe that every child deserves explicit, systematic phonics instruction. The research is overwhelming: when phonics is taught directly, in sequence, with practice and feedback, the vast majority of children — including those at risk for reading difficulties — learn to read successfully.
The "Open and Go" Philosophy
The name says it all: open a page and go. No sign-up forms, no subscription fees, no printout prep, no preparation time. Every page on this site is a complete, self-contained phonics lesson that a parent or teacher can use immediately.
We've done the lesson design so you don't have to. Each lesson includes the phonics concept, clear explanation of how to make each sound, word lists organized by difficulty, CVC word practice, and teaching tips — everything in one place.
Our Approach
All content on Open and Go Phonics is aligned with the science of reading — the body of research that identifies what works in early literacy instruction:
- Systematic: Skills are introduced in a logical order, from simple to complex.
- Explicit: Sounds and patterns are taught directly, not discovered by guessing.
- Sequential: Each new skill builds on previously mastered skills.
- Cumulative: Previously taught skills are reviewed regularly, not abandoned.
- Diagnostic: We provide guidance on where to start based on what the learner already knows.
